Mahendra Singh Dhoni, popularly known as MS Dhoni, is a former Indian cricketer and captain of the Indian national cricket team. Since his debut in 2008, Steve Smith has been one of the most successful captains in ODI cricket. Under his leadership, Australia have won three ICC ODI World Cups (in 2015, 2019 and 2020), four ICC Champions Trophies (in 2009, 2013, 2017 and 2020) and two ICC World Twenty20s (in 2010 and 2012).

Most Successful Captain in ODI Cricket: England's Alastair Cook
Since taking over the England captaincy in 2011, Alastair Cook has led his country to some impressive One Day International (ODI) victories. In fact, he is now the most successful captain in ODI cricket for England, with a total of 60 wins. Here are four of his most successful captaincies so far:
- The 2015 World Cup
Under Cook's captaincy, England reached the final of the 2015 World Cup, where they lost to Australia. This was a hugely impressive achievement, given that England had only ever reached the semi-finals of the tournament previously.
- The 2013 Champions Trophy
England were the defending champions in the 2013 Champions Trophy, andCook led them to victory once again, beating India in the final. This was a particularly special win, as it was the first time England had ever won back-to-back major ODI tournaments.
- The 2010 World Twenty20

Most Successful Captain in ODI Cricket: New Zealand's Brendon McCullum
Brendon McCullum is a former New Zealand international cricketer and current commentator, who played all formats of the game. A right-handed batsman, he captained New Zealand in all formats from late 2012, retiring in late 2016. McCullum took over the Test captaincy from Ross Taylor in late 2012, and led the team to their first Test series win in England since 1999. In February 2013, he became the first New Zealand player to score a Test triple century, when he reached 302 not out against India in Wellington. McCullum retired from international cricket on 24 February 2016.
In ODIs, McCullum captained New Zealand to their first World Cup final, co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand in 2015. He is New Zealand's leading run-scorer in Tests, and second-highest run-scorer in ODIs, behind Sachin Tendulkar. McCullum is widely regarded as one of the best batsmen of his generation. He is the only New Zealand player to have scored two double centuries in Test matches. In 2014, he was inducted into the ICC ODI Hall of Fame.
In McCullum's final Test series, against Australia in February 2016, he scored his maiden Test century, becoming the fifth New Zealand batsman to score a century in his final Test. McCullum's Test batting average of 38.64 is the second-highest by a New Zealander, behind only Stephen Fleming. In September 2016, McCullum was shortlisted for one of the two inaugural Wisden Leading Cricketers in the World Awards, recognising him as the leading cricketer in the world in 2015. The award is based on votes by Test-playing captains. In December 2016, McCullum was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire for services to cricket.
