Pressure washers have become an indispensable tool for both professionals and those who do their own home projects. The water jets from these power tools vary depending on the type of nozzle that's used. Some are good for removing dirt and grime, while others are powerful enough to strip paint off a surface. Pressure washers can be particularly powerful and it's important that you choose one thats adequate for your needs and skill level.
When deciding on a pressure washer, you have to consider your needs. What will you use your pressure washer for? Will you be cleaning vehicles and boats? Or will you be washing your home’s facade and driveway? You want to get a machine that has the right nozzles and attachments, so it can do your task properly. You also want to make sure the power of your machine is appropriate for what you need. Once you know what works and what doesn’t, then you can choose a pressure washer.
When buying a petrol-powered pressure washer, there are three main considerations and three minor features that you might overlook when you're shopping for a pressure washer.
HORSEPOWER
Whenever you’re shopping for a petrol pressure washer, your main considerations should be the power in the engine, not pressure. Some machines advertise high pressure without increasing the engine power – this will usually lead to a low quality and low amount of cleaning. The pressure rating should equal the HP of the engine.
Check pressure washers for their horsepower, psi (pounds per square inch), and gpm (gallons per minute). Most domestic pressure washers should go for a 5hp and while they can do washing work, a lower powered pressure washer would be better if you're planning on washing vehicles. Professional users, on the other hand, should go for at least 6.5hp. However, some people prefer commercial-grade 13hp pressure washers. They're only really useful in workshops and manufacturing plants
VOLUME
The volume of water that a pressure washer can shoot at a minute is called the GPM. It’s measured in gallons per minute. The higher the GPM, the more water the machine shoots out. Along with the PSI rating, this unit is one of the best indicators of how effective a petrol pressure washer is.
PRESSURE
Pressure is measured in units of pounds per square inch, or PSI. Many people believe that the unit of measurement is what matters most when choosing a pressure washer, but it’s actually the least important. However, PSI is still an important component. One of the best ways to measure a petrol pressure washer’s cleaning power is to multiply PSI with GPM. When you do this, you get an idea of how much power the machine has. Asking how many HP a machine has is also a great way to determine its power.
Pump
When you’re buying a pressure washer, you should check who made the pump. Cheaper models tend to source them from local factories or Chinese imports. Your best bet is to buy from a known and respected brand. And don’t forget to look for the pump parts — if it’s a high-quality model, you’ll usually see brass heads, ceramic plungers and thermal relief valves.
Vertical or Horizontal Shaft
One last thing to consider is the direction of the engine shaft. A vertical engine is cheaper up-front, but it has a shorter service life. Horizontal engines are more expensive, but they're more reliable in the long term. If you want your pressure washer to last for a long time, make sure it has a horizontal engine.
