AKS (AKS-47) is a Soviet nomenclature for a specific type of AK-47 with a folding stock. It’s not a generic name for all AK-type firearms with a folding stock. For example, the AKM is a later version of the AK-47 manufactured with a stamped receiver and other modifications. The folding stock version of the AKM is the AKMS. Other countries who manufactured AK-type rifles applied their own nomenclature. For example, China named their versions of the AK-47 and AKM as the Type 56 series of rifles.

So for a third party to add a folding stock to an AK-47, whether it’s an original AK-47 or a clone or variant, does not make it an AKS any more than shortening a “Chevy Suburban” turn it into a “Tahoe,” because those are model names applied by Chevy to two different SUVs that happen to be based on the same platform. A shortened Suburban is just a shortened Suburban; though if done right, in practice it and the Tahoe may be functionally about the same.

That said, nothing stops someone from referring to an AK clone that’s been modified with an added folding stock as an “AKS” if they want to. But strictly speaking, calling it an AKS would not be accurate.
