As Blizzard's recent release of D2R Items Immortal has shown, the transition from a PC-based ARPG to mobile is an obstacle. While it's impossible to know the likelihood that Torchlight Infinite succeeds on that front but it's clear that XD's version on the franchise intends to attract new players and long-time fans of the series. It's set 200 years after Torchlight II, it will include familiar abilities, classes and settings for fans of the series, however there's plenty of brand new characters and systems for fans to learn about in addition.
While Torchlight Infinite is being made to be mobile-friendly, it will also release on PC. In an interview via email with GameSpot creator Liu Heng said Torchlight Infinite will allow cross-progression. Players will be able to connect their accounts under one account as well as switch between mobile and PC without losing progress. In the PC versions, players will include a few upgrades beyond the mobile version including more camera options, wider perspectives, and additional control options.
The most important aspect to consider for any free-to-play game and especially one with loot-based content is how the game will be being monetized. On this front, Heng explained that purchases in Torchlight Infinite are broken down into two categories. Features like more bag space, talent resets, and auto-looting functionality will be what Heng described as "pay-for-convenience." New heroes, along with different cosmetics will be available for purchase and fit under what Heng described as "pay-for-content."
Torchlight Infinite will not sell craft materials or equipment for cash, Heng said. The items are "strictly made available for grinding" to guarantee fairness for everyone. Heng declared the fact that Torchlight Infinite won't have any stamina meters , or systems that restrict player progress, and said players will have the "freedom to begin and end their grinding at their Diablo 2 Resurrected Ladder Items own discretion."
