Google has announced plans to shut down its Stadia cloud gaming service and refund players.

Stadia was dubbed the "Netflix for games" when it launched in November 2019, allowing players to stream games online without a console.

But the service will end on January 18, 2023 due to lack of "traction" with gamers.

Google promises to refund players who purchased a Stadia controller and any game or add-on content.

It says it estimates those refunds will be completed by mid-January.

Stadia games run on servers at Google data centers around the world, with video footage streamed to your TV or mobile device.
