The main purpose of this paper is, basically, to understand my way of communicating with other people. By writing this paper, I will analyze my negotiation skills as demonstrated when I was purchasing a car. The skills I used and the skills I need to improve will both be addressed.

I know that personality plays a big role in my negotiating style. Luckily, I understand the characteristics that dominate my personality. I am a very confident person. When negotiating prices of commodities, as in the case of a car, I have strong personal characteristics that effect my negotiation style. These qualities include ability to listen, ability to manage conflict, dominance and sensitiveness.

My first time of negotiating the price of a car helped me realize that I am dominant. I realized that I want to wield influence over the seller. I could impose my own view, which happened especially when I could not agree with his ideas. I also have the ability to listen, even when I do not agree with the seller. Only after listening to him, I would share my disagreements. I believe that this characteristic helps me to stay sane and find out where the other party may be wrong, and build my arguments accordingly.

What is more, I am able to manage conflict. A difficult situation appeared between the seller and me, and I did my best to control it. In general, I can always take control of the situation. I faced the disagreement we had about the condition of the car in a calm and rational way by taking a planned approach. I also realized that I am a sensitive person, especially to what other people think. Therefore, I carefully listened to the seller’s view and changed my mind concerning some aspects by believing what he said about the car.

All in all, I believe that I need to improve my negotiation skills, especially concerning egoism. I think that my behavior emanates from the fact that I am the only child in my family and had been pampered as a kid. In the future, I hope to manage my egoistic behavior and be a better negotiator.
